Program Notes:

Waltz for the Courts of Queen Jadis is based on the character of Queen Jadis from The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis. Jadis' strong presence is found in the low, repetitive rhythmic motifs, yet these rhythms also suggest that a ritual is taking place, alluding to Jadis' magical powers. As the piece increases in intensity and dissonance, I imagine Jadis and her minions becoming more and more desperate, similar to the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel trying to persuade their god to send fire to consume the sacrifice. The piece fades at the end to suggest that the ritual is not over, but continues indefinitely as Jadis seeks ultimate power.
